• Federal Child Support Guidelines:A List of Selected Case Law and Summaries

• Divorce Act The federal Divorce Act was amended to establish the Federal Child Support Guidelines

• Bill C-41 A dreadful and draconian Act to amend the Divorce Act, the Family Orders and Agreements Enforcement Assistance Act, the Garnishment, Attachment and Pension Diversion Act and the Canada Shipping Act.

• Provincial and Territorial Child Support Information. Mostly just local phone numbers to the enforcement offices. Provincial legislation will apply if parents were never married to each other, or were married, have separated, but are not getting a divorce. If you require additional information on provincial or territorial legislation, please contact your provincial justice department or ministry of the attorney general.

• Family Law Act, 1986 Ontario Complete text of the rules. However, please note that these may not always be completely up to date.

• Procedural rules relating specifically to Divorce and Family law
  All the Rules of Civil Procedure that apply in an action, also apply in a divorce action, with necessary modifications, except where rules 69.03 to 69.27 provide otherwise.

Human Rights

• Human Rights Code: Statutes of Ontario 1990 Full text on line

• Federal Access to Information Act and Privacy Act. Resources related to Canadian laws and policies dealing with access to information and privacy.

  Note that John Reid the official watchdog for Access to Information condemned the civil service and the government for "disdain for the public right of access" and further reported that "for 20 years, Canadians seeking information --- especially about any subject the government considered sensitive -- have been met by a wall of obstruction, obfuscation and delay."

  The Metro Toronto Police force to cite another example usually responds to requests for information about police officers with the stock reply that all such information is considered part of their personnell file and therefore exempt.

• Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner/Ontario
• The IPC says it acts independently of government to uphold and promote open government and the protection of personal privacy. That's what it says, but ... This is your last resort for information which has been denied you by other Ontario government agencies under the Freedom of Information statutes. For some reason Commissioner Ann Cavoukian seems to feel it is necessary to post a nearly full body length picture of herself on the site's home page. Vanity, I suppose. One wonders how she got appointed to this plum job. Did she have any qualifications other then her gender? Just curious.

• Canadian Human Rights Reporter Excellent site covering important cases in Human RIghts law and developments in Canada. Criminal Law
If you have been charged with any crime, or are being questioned even in the most friendly manner by your local police, keep your mouth shut. Say nothing. Tell the officers that you have nothing to say until you talk to your lawyer. You will not talk your way out of or explain away their suspicions by "cooperating." You will only hang yourself. Our jails are full of innocent people. You could easily join them if you talk too much.

If ignorance of the law is no excuse, why is it illegal to practice law unless you have a law degree?

• Download your own copy The complete Criminal Code of Canada (unannotated). You may find this interesting browsing. Although it deals with very interesting characters, the plot is poorly developed and the action tends to drag. This file is zipped in Word Perfect 4.2 and any word processor should be able to open it. If not, please do not ask us to send you something else. We do not have another version.

• U of T Centre of Criminology A treasure trove of studies, statistics and resources.

• PhoneBusters A national government backed resource to nail telephone fraud artists. Advice, tips, free literature and snitch lines. Now if they would only stop Candice Bergen from driving us crazy with those interminable and damnable commercials...

• Corrections Canada "Corrections," Prison, Inmates, Offenders, Parole, treatment, offender programs.
  Why is it ok for male prisoners to be strip searched by female guards, but not for females to be strip searched by male guards? Why is ok for male prisoners to be beaten, raped and sexually enslaved in our prisons? Imagine the outcry if this happened to female prisoners? What is going on here?

• Canadian Department of Justice A lot of propaganda, but useful information is buried in the chaff.

The Constitution

The Canadian Constitution is integral to the creation, implementation and maintenance of laws in Canadian society. It is the supreme law of the land and an important part of our history and society. Read the text or can learn about the history of the documents and how they were developed. You can even compare the Canadian Constitutionwith those from other federations.


Charter of Rights and Freedoms The http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/charter/ guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society. It is "as Canadian as possible under the circumstances."

Constitution Act, 1867 An alternative site "An Act for the Union of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick, and the Government thereof, and for Purposes connected therewith. (29 March, 1867.)" Boy, is this boring!!

Charlottetown Constitutional Accord " A new clause should be included as section 2 of the Constitution Act, 1867 that would express fundamental Canadian values. Here is an on-line database of BC Court decisions. It is not a good as it could be, but it is searchable!
