  • Ontario - Click here Legal Aid Ontario Legal aid is officially available across the province, to lower-income people for a variety of legal problems, including criminal matters, family disputes, immigration and refugee hearings and poverty law issues such as landlord/tenant disputes and employment insurance. However in reality, it is largely reserved for women, homosexuals, lesbians and minorities. White men need not apply.

    Every Ontario resident and, in certain cases, non-residents requiring legal assistance can apply. Eligibility is based on financial need and the type of case. The applicant may pay nothing or a portion of the costs of the legal aid, depending on their financial situation. Once approved, a legal aid certificate entitles a person to retain the lawyer of their choice. The lawyer is then reimbursed by Legal Aid Ontario.

    Legal aid area offices in 48 communities receive and process client applications and issue legal aid certificates to financially eligible people, which allow clients to receive legal services from the lawyer of their choice.

    Community Legal Clinics: Legal advice and representation is also available through 70 independent community legal clinics to clients who have problems such as housing, social assistance, pensions, workers' compensation, and employment insurance.

  • Quebec - Click here Commission des services juridiques- Legal Aid is especially intended for the economically disadvantaged. It gives them access to the courts, the professional services of an attorney or a notary, and the information they need regarding their rights and obligations.

    Eligibility for legal aid is based on several factors. An applicant's family obligations, income, property and liquid assets are taken into account in the processing of applications.

    Persons eligible for legal aid are entitled to the services of a legal aid attorney. They are also entitled to those of an attorney in private practice if he accepts; however, not all services are covered.

    Description of Services: provideS the Duty Counsel lawyers at Provincial Court in Sussex, Hampton, Saint John and St. Stephen in both adult and youth courts. We provide lawyers for trials to successful applicants for serious criminal charges and for parents when the Department of Health and Community Services is applying for permanent custody of the child/children.
    Criteria for Service Eligibility
    Applicant must be financially eligible to obtain Legal Aid for trials.
