The private security industry has grown dramatically over the past 40 years, from 4,600 licensed security guards and private investigators in Ontario in 1966, to over 40,000 today. Additionally, there are approximately 600 licensed agencies in the province providing security guard and private investigation services.
The new act will help professionalize the security industry, increase public safety and ensure that practitioners received proper training and are qualified to provide protective services. The act is supported by a number of regulations that govern the way the private security industry operates in Ontario.

What is a Private Investigator?
Generally, "Private Investigator" means a person who investigates and furnishes information for hire or reward, including a person who,
(a) searches for and furnishes information as to the personal character or actions of a person, or character or kind of business or occupation of a person,
(b) searches for offenders against the law, or
(c) searches for missing persons or property.
The Private Investigation profession is growing at such a rate that even the government regulators find themselves overwhelmed. As law enforcement budgets are stretched, Private Investigators are playing a larger role in both the domestic and business affairs of the community.
There are as many different kinds of investigations as there are investigators. The Private Investigation profession is a diverse and multi faceted occupation with the Private Investigators coming from varied backgrounds.
